Somewhere along the line, however, everything became more complex. Some blame the conversation pit era; that crafty sofa that didnt really have an end. Venerable end tables simply had nowhere to go. Coffee tables were suddenly on their own, placed in the center of the pit so visitors had a place to put their drinks while they, well, conversed. Today, end tables have made a comeback. No longer sold automatically in pairs with a coffee table, they have struck out on their own, joined by accent tables, occasional tables, drum tables, side tables... the list goes on and on and on.

Some people purchase their tables as part of a table set. This usually includes a matching coffee table. But you dont have to purchase them this way. Conceivably, each table can be different, if they have the same general design elements, the same palette of color or stain, the same architectural lines, etc. If you have two end tables in the room, you do want these to match, but they can contrast with the coffee table. That said, your biggest decision is probably what kind of table you want in the first place. For instance, some homeowners prefer the end tables on the small side, large enough to hold a lamp and perhaps a glass or small plate, but not much more. Others want their tables to be as large as possible, so they have maximum real estate when theres a party of holiday gathering.

Some prefer to have a table that has several drawers for storage; others prefer a single drawer with perhaps a small shelf along the bottom. It largely depends on the needs of your home. A single drawer table with long legs is visually lighter than an end table with drawers or a drawer and a lower shelf. The "visual weight" of a piece is important in keeping a room from looking too crowded. The lines between what is and what isnt an end table has blurred in recent years. In fact, accent tables will now do very good service as end tables, adding a little more character to the room.

If youre looking for a stunning set of end tables, you really cant go wrong with steel. Because they are so adaptable in terms of construction, they can come in an endless array of finishes, design and styles. Many mix metal with glass or ceramics. You can also get metal tables that are blended with wood elements, which may be the perfect match to a transitional or more traditional design. Or metal end tables that are a mix of metal and stone. When shopping for end tables you want to consider a few things. First, the finish. If your sofa or other furnishings have a metal accent to them, say a strip of silver or brass along the front, you want to make sure that your tables have the same finish. The same is true if youre trying to match a coffee table you already have. For example, you may have a lovely coffee table with antique brass hardware. Youll want to use this as a springboard in your own decision-making, going with a similar finish for your end tables.

So how to you narrow down your choices? The first decision is what youre going to use your table for. If you want to have a lamp on it along with leaving enough room for someone to set a drink or plate down, you probably want to go with an end table and not an accent table, which is smaller in scale and dimensions. Still, there are a lot of different sizes for end tables so you want to make sure that when choosing the perfect end table you get one that is correctly portioned. For instance, if you are placing the table at the end of a sofa, you want the table to be nearly as deep as the sofa or three quarters of its depth. The same is true if you place an end table next to a chair or between a set of chairs. In this case it can be a bit smaller in stature, but the actual size can be influenced by its style. A blocky table can be smaller than a more delicate, leggy table, for instance.
