While homes seem to be larger than ever, many homeowners are in the process of downsizing these days, either because of economic circumstances or simply a desire to live a simpler life. Just because you live in a smaller dwelling doesnt mean that you have to give up the comforts of home youve become so used to. Rather, you may simply need to change some of the furnishings, keeping your favorites and then balancing them with smaller support pieces. Perhaps no example is better than the use of small end tables. Love seats and sofas are big-ticket items and most people will want to take them to the new home. Unfortunately, furniture scaled for a home may look a bit cramped in a smaller home or apartment. This is where small end tables can save the day. You can change the scale of your end tables while still keeping your favorite upholstered furnishings.
For example, you can get coffee and end table sets that are long on storage as well as style. Many coffee tables come with storage space inside, accessible either by doors or through a lift top table that cantilevers up and out from the coffee table itself. The same is true of end tables. Some have shelves, others have a single drawer while still others have several drawers, allowing you to keep things out of sight and out of mind when not in use. These are perfect for families or people who have pets. When company comes over, just store all the toys in the drawers and doored units of your coffee and end table sets. Keep in mind that you dont have to follow any conventions when selecting tables for your home. While traditional coffee tables and end tables are square or rectangular, theres no rule saying you cant pick a round or oval model, or even improvise and go with a totally non-traditional piece that will fill the bill nicely, such as a trunk or chest.
End tables are often an afterthought in a living room or great room. Often, so much time goes into making decisions about the upholstered pieces, the coffee table, the lamps and the paint, that it becomes an, "oh, and we also need some end tables" type of decision. Sad, since these tables can really complete the look of the room and not only give you some much needed storage and stacking areas, but also add character. Thats because they come in so many varieties, styles and sizes. So how do you go about choosing the right table? The first considerations are scale and the space available. An end table shouldnt dominate the space its in. Rather, it should complement the other furnishings, especially those pieces nearest it. Additionally, if you already have a coffee table in place, you want the end tables to be in the same finish and style.
Accent Tables. Accent tables are usually sold individually. They are a little splashier in appearance and are supposed to "accent" the décor in your room. As such, they come in many different shapes and finishes, including drum tables, drop leaf tables and tilt tops. They can be used in place of end tables, particularly if you just want a table on one side of the sofa or loveseat. Chairside Tables: End tables can be used as chairside tables, of course. The only difference is the chairside table often has a smaller footprint and is sized to place next to a recliner or chair. Smaller end tables can do the same thing, offering you flexibility in your room designs.
Another thing to consider when choosing from the various styles is that you should choose end tables that meet your personal needs. For instance, you may have decorated your family room in a traditional style, but if an arts & crafts end table would serve your needs better than a traditional end table and you can find one that looks good with your other furniture, you should probably choose the arts & craft style instead of the traditional. While the wide variety of various styles of end tables can make shopping a bit more challenging, it does afford for a much larger selection for you to choose from. Pub tables are no longer just found in bars. Nowadays there are pub tables used for the home as well. They have proven to offer quite a bit of versatility and while many have always thought pub tables are only used for entertaining purposes, many others realize the full range these tables offer.
