Essie Roth. End Table. January 29th , 2018.
Round tables are really in this year as a style, but while round coffee tables and round dining tables have taken center stage, it can be harder to find round end tables. Thats not to say that these tables arent still trendy. Its just that traditional brick and mortar retailers have only so much room for furniture and these other round tables have captured all the press this year. Thankfully, there is still a great selection of round coffee tables online and online retailers in some cases, have them priced to move. In contrast to square end tables, round ones can give your room a much softer look, making it more friendly and inviting. This is due to the tricks our eyes like to play on us. For reasons beyond the scope of this article, our eye associates square, blocky items as being more formal, while round and oval are seen as more approachable and relaxed.
While homes seem to be larger than ever, many homeowners are in the process of downsizing these days, either because of economic circumstances or simply a desire to live a simpler life. Just because you live in a smaller dwelling doesnt mean that you have to give up the comforts of home youve become so used to. Rather, you may simply need to change some of the furnishings, keeping your favorites and then balancing them with smaller support pieces. Perhaps no example is better than the use of small end tables. Love seats and sofas are big-ticket items and most people will want to take them to the new home. Unfortunately, furniture scaled for a home may look a bit cramped in a smaller home or apartment. This is where small end tables can save the day. You can change the scale of your end tables while still keeping your favorite upholstered furnishings.
If you do have small end tables that are open, you may want to consider adding a contrasting linen or lace piece to the top and even have it extend over and down the sides some. This will give your table a bit more bulk without taking up added space. For really small homes, you can eliminate one of the end tables entirely. While its nice to have end tables on both ends for convenience and balance, there is no hard and fast rule requiring this. You may be able to make due with a single table and perhaps add a floor lamp on the other side to add light and even things out visually.
Somewhere along the line, however, everything became more complex. Some blame the conversation pit era; that crafty sofa that didnt really have an end. Venerable end tables simply had nowhere to go. Coffee tables were suddenly on their own, placed in the center of the pit so visitors had a place to put their drinks while they, well, conversed. Today, end tables have made a comeback. No longer sold automatically in pairs with a coffee table, they have struck out on their own, joined by accent tables, occasional tables, drum tables, side tables... the list goes on and on and on.
Selecting an end table is simply a matter of choice, and there are plenty of end tables and accent tables to choose from. The unique thing about choosing an end table, as opposed to other pieces of furniture, is the fact that it not only has to match the furniture you already have, but it also has to fit in the space you have. Unlike coffee tables, end tables must be squeezed in at the end of a couch or in between chairs. They provide an additional space for glasses, lamps, books, and anything else you might want to set there. An end table can be a magazine rack or just a small table for a lamp. It can be an accent feature in the room, or it can just be an elegant addition. It all depends on what you are looking for.
